Billy Sothern, a tenacious New Orleans defense attorney, passes away at age 45
Billy Sothern passed away on September 30 at his home in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, where he and his family had relocated during the pandemic. Billy Sothern was a defense attorney known for taking on some of Louisiana’s most difficult capital cases, including the wrongful conviction of Albert Woodfox, who spent 42 years in solitary confinement for a crime he didn’t commit.
He was 45.
His wife, Nikki Page Sothern, said that he committed suicide after battling Covid, thyroid cancer, and major depressive disorder.
Mr. Sothern reminded me of a character from a John Grisham novel with his cherubic grin, vivacious idealism, and strong legal skills.
He moved to New Orleans from New York City in 2001, fresh out of law school and determined to defend poor clients in the Deep South’s “Death Belt,” which stretches from East Texas to lower Alabama and features many cases involving the death penalty.
Obituary And Burial Arrangements
Billy Sothern’s funeral arrangements will be revealed by her family. The family and loved ones will share details about the obituary, funeral, and life celebration at the appropriate time. We will do our best to keep you updated on them.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the deceased’s family and friends, who have been struggling with the loss of such an intelligent and compassionate individual.
